Orpheus Two Glen Smith and Eryk White, and heres our story; We first met at Canterbury college, Kent ,while studying a Diploma in music Technology, after getting together to complete a Performance project for the college, along with two other very good friends, Dave (whos surname will remain un-named), and Owen Bell who doesnt mind as hes not half as dodgy as Dave, all four of us decided we should stop playing our music in our bedrooms and boring the hell out of all our families and friends, and get together to form a Live Techno/Trance band (and why the hell not).
Dave got in contact with club promoters Phil and Karin from Tunbridge wells (Trancegression), and they came down to Folkestone to listen to us having a jam session (as we had not written any tracks together at that point).
They came down with Dj Toby Decks, who is now a good friend of ours ( if it hadnt been for him we would never have got off our arses and got out of our bedrooms as soon as we did!!) They offered us a 1-hour set for 2nd January 1998 at Trancegression, the Forum Tunbridge Wells. Well we hadnt written anything at that point (shit!), and only had one month to write an hours worth of Bang'in material, (Shit, Shit!). Not to mention we had Christmas and New Year in between, anyway we stayed up for many nights working on our set, using non-ethical methods to accomplish our goals, anyway thirty or so stressed out days later we loaded up the kit into the van and set off for Tunbridge Wells. When we arrived Phill, Karin, Toby and crew were busy setting up the venue for the evenings entertainment. with trip the fluro light fantastic décor and a very friendly atmosphere, it was sure to be a good night. Well one oclock came round very quickly for us all I can tell you, and four very nervous people got up onto the stage and so was born Aural Resonance.
Well, what a night!! , The crowd jumped up and down with hands in the air for the complete hour, even a guy on crutches was avin it large, from that moment on we new that this was what we wanted to do, such a buzz, we didnt need any more encouragement to continue writing new tunes as we had got all the encouragement we needed from the crowd and crew of Trancegression in Tunbridge Wells.
Well there was no stopping us, or so it seemed. With many gigs coming in thick and fast including local clubs in Kent and supporting Astralasia on two occasions at The Penny Theatre in Canterbury, Kent. We went on to do gigs in London including Tantrism 4 Aces Dalston, Escape from Samsara, Dilemma Studio 404 Lilford Road Brixton, Tribal Kaos (who we owe so much too, thanks to all the crew), Techtonic, Trancentral, and the massive party at the Drome called Tranceformations where we played alongside other great and respected acts such as Cybernaut, Green Nuns of the Revolution, Disaster Area, Moksha, Sentience and Lab 4. Also playing at Gillingham music festival 'Parklife' in 1999, which was a first for dance music to grace their stage, we also headlined BINARY FINARY at the WEDGEWOOD ROOMS in Portsmouth ( the crowd didnt like us as we were far to bangin and fast , lets face it BINARY FINARY wrote some wicked fluffy tunes, like BINARY FINARY, BINARY FINARY 99, and Im sure they will release BINARY FINARY 2K, if they havent already, or should I say that one member from the band was responsible for practically all their tunes, only he didnt have the balls to stand up on his own, Shame !!!!)
Many people asked us where they could get our records, CDs and tapes but we kept turning down offers from various labels as we felt that they were offering poor deals, well that was the case until Pat Hurley from A.R.D offered us a deal. Unfortunately this was just before the label collapsed under Roy Aquariuss command, again Shame !!!!!.
Why Live without a safety dat I hear you ask .
Well, once we turned up at a very respected Brixton club on a Friday night, when we started to unload all our keyboards, drum machines, compressors, effects units etc.. They asked us why we needed so much equipment, extremely puzzled we asked why they asked such a question, when they replied, Most of the bands that play here mime to a DAT tape, in fact youre one of three bands that have ever played live for us! we were shocked. What a sad outlook on future clubbing if this is the way of things, I mean lets just put a bloody long tape on and some cardboard cut-outs on stage and in the Dj box and hey, FUNKIN CRAP.
We also found out a band that was mentioned earlier mimed at the club in question and got paid £600!! I wont tell you who else has (n't) played live, just take a close look at live P.As equipment, check if their keyboards are even switched on and have audio leads trailing from them to mixing desk is a good start. I dont want to slag off the much respected 'LIVE' P.As but come on, you get paid a lot of money for what you do, SO DO IT !!
so it seemed that 'LIVE' had come to mean live with a safety DAT and a mime (a bit like TOP OF THE POPS really), so we wanted people to know that when WE played 'LIVE' it was in fact 'LIVE WITHOUT A SAFETY DAT'
Well all good things come to an end, and Aural Resonance did just that :( I wont tell you why but just suffice to say that we are still all good friends and we are all becoming successful in our respected fields, Dave who was our Manager/Player has set up his own lighting company ARC-I, which Im very pleased to say is doing very well indeed, Owen who always played new stuff live every gig,has taken time out to be a dad:) and well Eryk and Glen, they went on to form a new act called.........
Eryk and Glen have worked hard to produce a new sound, but also to keep an element of the Aural Resonance flavour in amongst it all ( I dont know if we' ve achieved to do this, youll have to be the judge of that one!!)
Anyhow 6 months or so since the split of Aural Resonance, lots of time off to reflect and write some new tunes, we got a phone call from Medway Music 2000 and they asked us if Aural Resonance would like to play again this year at both of their one day festivals.
Well I had to tell them the sad but true story, but offered to send them a demo CD from Orpheus Two, great they said well wait for it to arrive and then let you know. One week later we got another phone call, can you play on bank holiday Monday 29th may 2000, Yes I said, can you play last for 1 hour , Yep' I replied, and can you play on the main stage, again the reply was Yep, sure can, and that was how we managed our first gig as Orpheus Two, well who would have guessed that a band who have never played out to anyone, and who have not had had their tunes heard by anyone, could headline a local festival at Maidstone in front of 5000 people, not us thats for sure. But we did. but hey! that's the start of another story........
